We received an email last month from a Canadian girl named Shelby H, who included a photo of a hairstyle that we used as inspiration for this tutorial.
The braid is a unique combination of a vertical Waterfall Twist and a Mermaid Braid. I had never thought of combining those two braids before, and the resulting braid is stunning! Thanks, Shelby!
Please carefully notice the stranding for the first few braid stitches. This stranding can be confusing, but once you get one or two stitches down… the rest of the braid is a cinch. You can certainly braid this hairstyle up tightly, but we prefer it loose. We’ve tried both.
This is a cute hairstyle that fits in line with many of the Mermaid Braid variations floating on Pinterest. I can already imagine using this braid as a base for an updo combo, taking it down to the base of the head and then creating a chignon, or curled/braided bun. For French Braid lovers, this braid will also fit nicely in your style arsenal!

Did you notice something different about Kamri in this week’s tutorial? It was her birthday a few weeks ago, and at age 12 we allow our girls to start wearing makeup {a little mascara and lip gloss}. She was thrilled to be my model, because she was hoping you would all notice her eyes! Not that Kamri needs mascara, because her lashes are so long, but it does make them darker.
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 5 minutes
Skill Level: Medium
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin with your hair parted slightly off to one side {Alternate Option: you can brush all the hair back away from the face and have no part line}…
- Move to the back of the head, at the crown, and pick up a section of hair…
- Divide that section of hair into two strands…
- Take the left strand and move it over the right strand…
- Pick up another section of hair from the left, and take it over the left-most strand and place it in the middle of the two twist strands…
- Now take the left stand and move it over the right stand again {this creates a twist in the center just as you do in the the Waterfall Twist}, creating your first stitch…
- Next, do a stitch the other way by picking up another section of hair from the right, and take it over the right-most strand and place it in the middle of the two twist strands…
- Then, take the left strand again and move it over the right stand, creating your 2nd stitch…
- Repeat Steps #5-8 all the way down the hair, keeping the hair slightly loose so that the braid isn’t too tight.
- Optional: As you go down, you can pull out a few wispy strand out near the face to frame the front and soften the look…
- As you reach the end of the braid, the ends of the hair your strands will become more distinct because you have already used them previously…
- Secure with an elastic, adjust the braid to your liking, and add hairspray {if desired}.
