Cute Heart Accents | Valentine’s Day Hairstyles

Today we will be showing you how to create Heart Accents, fitting right into our Valentine’s Day Hairstyle theme we’ve been running the past few weeks. These accents are perfect for girls of all ages and with all hair lengths {short, medium, and long}.

Shaun actually came in to me a few weeks ago with three strings and a few rubber bands, that made a heart just like this. He asked me what I thought of the style and if we could use it for a Valentine’s Day tutorial. I told him that it would be perfect! I could tell he was so proud of himself! =0)

What is perfect about accents, is that you can combine them easily into hairstyle combinations, such as a bun, ponytail, or braids. We’ve tried a few and they are cute! Kamri’s style here is a perfect example of a combination using the heart accent.

Not everybody likes the idea of walking around with a huge heart on the side or back of their head, so what’s great about these heart accents is that they can age downwards or upwards, depending on how you style them.

For a younger look, adjust the heart size up, and for an older look, adjust the heart size down. In fact, my twins prefer the 1 tiny heart accent into a combo. Rylan likes her style just as you see here.

For Kamri, we added a Faux Fishtail which made for a very beautiful final look!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray wax, 5 small hair elastics, hairspray or accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by parting hair slightly off to one side…
  2. One the light side of the hair, the side with less hair, and about halfway back, section off a 3-inch rectangle…
  3. Move down about ½ inch from the scalp and secure the section of hair with a small elastic…
  4. Now, divide that section into three equal strands…
  5. Braid each strand into its own 3-strand micro-braid…
  6. Using your fingernails, or a rat tail comb, pull one side of the elastic away from the section of hair and slide the right-most braid half way back upward through the elastic…
  7. Do the same with the left-most braid on the other side…
  8. Pull up on both of the flipped braids until they are only about ½ inch inside the elastic…
  9. You should now have one middle micro-braid that hangs straight downward, and two micro-braids {one on each side of the middle braid} that go upward through the elastic and then arc back downward {leaving the middle braid there will better help the heart hold it’s structure and less likely to collapse throughout the day}…
  10. Now, gather the ends of the two side braids together with the middle braid to form your heart shape, sliding the base of the heart up or down, or cinching the strands, to adjust the heart shape/width/height/size as desired…
  11. Secure the base of the heart together, the three strands, with a hair elastic…
  12. Remove the three elastics from the bottom of the braids, and allow the hair to fall naturally…
  13. Add hairspray and an accessory, {if desired}.

*Optional: You can create more than one heart accent using the same strands, as we did with Kamri here.
